Hello everyone. My dad has a 720LP that was leaking oil out of the axle seals when he got it and we got to thinking that it propably had too much oil it so we drained it. According to the manual, it is supposed to hold 8 gallons of oil in the gearcase. When I pulled the plugs, about 16 gallons came out. We felt better after we saw that someone had just put too much it. After flushing out with kerosene, we pulled out the overfill plug on the left side of the gearcase like the manual showed so we would know when it was full. Well, I thought that we had (2) 5 gallon buckets of 80 weight oil but only had one so I poured it in the hole in the floor board. After that, we went to the hydraulics. The manual called for 14 quarts of hydraulic oil and to puor it in on the back of the tractor, directly below the battery box but kind of on the left half of the battery box. Well, after I got 12 quarts (3 gallons)in it. Oil started puoring out of the overfill plug for the crankcase. (The previous five and this three equals 8 gallons). My question is, do these oils share a cavity and if so shouldn't there be only one oil? I am pretty sure that my 2510 uses the same oil for these purposes and I am wondering what we need to do. Please help and thanks for your responses.

Since this gear oil has been running in my hydraulic system, is there anything that I need to do to flush this out or anything? Thanks alot for all of your help.

It sounds like the freeze plug in your rockshaft housing has been pushed out into your transmission. This would allow the oil that you put into the hydraulics to flow freely into the gear case causing a lot of headaches. Was there any metal shavings that came out when you drained the transmission oil?? If so it could have been what was left of the freeze plug. You probably need to remove the rockshaft housing and determine the problem. Good luck

anothertractor, that expansion plug that Tyler talks about could very well be the problem [see plug above the red arrow]. For some reason the Power-Trol is freely leaking into the trans..

I think the arrow may be pointing to a seal that prevents the PTO gear oil and the transmission oil from getting together and does not prevent leakage of the hydraulic oil. Best bet is to pull it off to find leak. Be sure you have or get a manual from Tractor Supply.
By the way there are inner seals on the axles which are supposed to keep the trans oil from getting out to the outer grease seals.

Ellis, yes, that arrow is pointing to the PTO pump seal. That is why I said [see plug ABOVE the red arrow]. That picture is all I had handy & was for a PTO pump seal problem a while ago.. Probably should have made it a little more clear about the plug being higher up.. The plug in question is the one up in the middle of the housing .
