Looking in tappet area.Oil only drains down from valve area down a hole at the left side (both heads). Is there only one functioning hole per head. There is a hole at each head on right side also, but oil will not go down there.I wonder if that is because the heads are meant to go either side,so 2 holes drilled 1 works?comment appreciated

robert,

I just went out and looked at my parts pony motor and the block oil return holes are drilled only on the back (transmission) side, so you would have to have the one functioning oil return hole on the right side of one head and the left side of the other. Hope this helps.

Robert, it's been a while since I have had the heads off a V-4 pony but if I remember correctly there is just one working lower oil return hole per side.. I believe both the heads & gaskets do have two holes though..

Robert:

As I look at the photo in the '70'D service manual, to me, there is only one drain back hole per side, and yes, I think it was because the heads were to be used on either side. They're really small, so you can see how just a little bit of sludge would stop them up. Then the oil spills over the valve guides, and the smokin' begins!

I wonder if there is any room to drill the 2nd hole or enlarge the single drain port?

That sounds like a good thing to try if someone has a cracked pony head and block laying around. Start by drilling it out a bit at a time and let us know at what size hole when/if the wall breaks down.
