I have been having trouble with my 2440's hydraulic filters clogging up, thus making the system useless. We originally drained all the hydraulic fluid out that we could, and replaced both the long, skinny filter, and the cartridge one as well. It worked fine for a while, but is now clogged again. We cleaned it out last night, and within a few minutes was not working properly. There seems to be some gunk up in there, somewhere.

So the big question, What is the best way, or is there a way to flush the hydraulic system on this tractor??? Any helpful thoughts or ideas are appreciated!!!

If you follow this site, you've probably already read this, but the number to reach John Deere for manuals is; 1-800-522-7448. Have serial number handy. You need these. VERY IMPORTANT STUFF

Thanks again KYDIRTFARMER,

I have a log-in to their parts site, and am thinking about ordering them on cd-rom. It's about 1/2 the price of the books, and I can print out the pages I need.

After I fix the brakes, if that is the problem, I still am wondering about a way to flush the hydraulic reservoir on the tractor. Any Ideas???

Thanks!!

Let me ask my "expert". We have a dealer nearby, that has 2 guys that run the shop, that have been there for 38 and 29 years. They have seen it all. I'll ask John about your situation. I've flushed older tractors with diesel fuel. It has enough "oil" qualities that it doesn't do harm. I wouldnt recomend it in the 2440 hydraulic system though. I'll try to find out, and let you know. I have the CD/rom version, and the hard copy also. (One at the house, and one at the shop)

Kydirtfarmer, I really appreciate your help.

I looked at some of the junk that was on the transmission filter (1"x10" long) and rubbed it between my fingers, and it crumbled and the residue looked shiny but not too gritty. When we took out the filter(the one mentioned above) the other night it only had junk at the very first 1" of the filter, and the rest was clean. We cleaned the filter, strained the fluid and put it back in. (By the way, this is Traveller brand fluid from Tractor supply co, but my dad picked it up because it said it meets all the specs.) We started the tractor, and ran it for about 1 minute operating the front end loader up and down, and then it stopped working again.

Is it possible for there to be air bubbles in the hydraulic system, or should they bleed themselves out in the belly of the tractor?

I appreciate your continued help on the problem!!!

I might be the wrong person to talk to about oil. I use Pennsoil in EVERYTHING. The TSC oil gets a bad rap. I hear of people all the time, having a "small" hydraulic problem, draining there tractor, filling it with TSC oil, then having a "bigger" problem. Then they blame the oil. Dirt destroys hydraulic systems, the same as it will an engine. I'm not a mechanic, but here's what I'd do. Drain the system again. Fill the rear end with about 10 gallons of diesel fuel. DO NOT START THE TRACTOR. You have a rear pump, that pushes oil to the front (main) hydraulic pump. You don't want to send a charge of diesel to the front pump. Let it set for a while. Drain it, and let the tranny drip dry. Clean the screen. (What you are calling the long thin filter). Replace the cartridge filter. (The one on the Outside of the tranny). Fill it with new oil. (Not screened) I would do all of this ONLY after satisfying yourself that your not dealing with brake lining trash. (You don't have to be out of brakes for them to be breaking up. It could be just one pad) After doing this, consult the manual, and pressure test the system at any points you can. (With gauge) (Both to and from loader control, remote couplers, ect) The lines running from front to back of the tractor, from the hydraulic pump are relativly easy to remove, and clean. Do that too. Get all the dirt out of the system. It'll never work quite right untill then. After that, you MUST figure out where the "dirt" is coming from.

The manuals come directly from John Deere. The local dealer can give you a 1-800----- -# that allows you to order them directly. The owners manual, the shop manual, and the parts manual, all three were about $200, including frieght. While that sounds like a lot, if you plan on keeping this tractor any time at all, you'll need it. I have seen several "aftermarket" manuals. Don't waste your money. This is written by the people that built your tractor. They know what to do and what not to do. I had my brakes done by a dealership. They were working on several other things, and I decided to have them go ahead and do them while the tractor was apart. As I recall, the price was around $800. You are dealing with a much bigger tractor than what you are used to. Repairs are more. They get more work done. It's a trade-off. If you get this problem straightened out, you will be thrilled with the 2440. It is an awsome tractor for it's size.

Thanks Kydirtfarmer! I will order the manuals, and see what I can figure out about the brakes.

I have a 2030 and a 830 (3cyl) - your problem is most likely with brake linings. Check for water in hydraulics - if you have water your brake linings will deteriate and blind off the hydraulic filter in no time.

First thing, order an owners manual, a shop manual, and a parts manual from John Deere. The next thing you want to do, is evaluate just how much you are willing to tackle, as far as the repairs. If you have some experience with mechanics, and understand technical manuals, you sould be able to do this one. If you decide to "deffer" this one to the John Deere dealer, get ready to shell out some healthy dollars. It sounds like brake linings, and it needs the attention of someone that knows what they're doing. I have a 2440, and know EXACTLY what is involved in changing brakes. Good luck, and let us know how you do. Bill

Kydirtfarmer, Thanks for the information. I guess the consensus of the replies is that I should check out the brakes. If you do not mind I have a few more questions for you sense you've done the job of replacing them before.

Are the manuals you mentioned us getting best from John Deere? Any other brands?

Is there a simple (less invasive) way to find out if the brakes are the culprit, or is the information that I previously gave, give it away? I guess that the brakes are not suppose to make a grinding/binding noise when you use them. Should it feel more like a vehicles brakes?

How much(approximate $$$) and what parts would I look at replacing?

If I have the manuals and the parts in hand, how long should it take to tackle a job like this?

What kind of $$$ estimate would a John Deere dealer charge to do this type of work?

Sorry for the long post and for so many questions. We just purchased the JD 2440, a couple of months ago. I am used to a Ford 2000, and a Farmall Super C.

Thanks!

If you have that much junk in there clogging things up right away, you may very well have other problems that need fixing.
I understand a failed brake lining will put a lot of junk in the system. Just one example.
Try to find out what that stuff is that clogs your filter and go from there.

How easy is it to check the brakes? How smooth should the operation be when applying the pedals? As of right now, it makes a grabbing noise and sounds like something like metal is dragging. I am not that familiar with the way these brakes are set up? What and how should I look for the problem?

Thanks!

I don't know how to check them. Never did that job. The 2440 I have ran does not make any noise when braking. You can inquire at your JD dealer.
Perhaps get yourself some manuals too.
