ring are gone on my 420 what would be a fair price for a mechanic to charge (if i can find a good one) i might even check at the local JD dealer, the fella has always been more than fare on equipment when compared to others i have checked with ( he sold me a lx5 cutter for 300 less than 4 other jd dealers) I'd change em my self but i just don't have time and i need the tractor running soon.

We had our 430 rebuilt last year. It is the same motor as the 420. Two things to keep in mind. JD dose not recommend that those engines be bored out to more then .040. There are after market pistons and rings that go up to .120, but I doubt that you will find a JD dealer that will put in anything over the .040 as they have to stand behind it. The other thing is I would personaly not tear down an engine just for rings if I was going to keep the tractor and use it. Ours was done at the local JD dealer and they went through the whole engine. The engine was already bored out to .040 and the cylinders were out of round. Shade tree mecanices had a tenicy to just hone the cylinders as they lack the proper gages to check this. They sleved the the block and took it back to stock, head work and crank shaft was done. They also rebuilt the governor as the holes for the pins holding the weights on were out of round. They had holes machined and bushed. Total cost as I recall was about $2,500. I don't recall if the carb rebuilding was on that bill or was on another bill.

Thought I might have been able to help you out.
I'm in S.E. Missouri, 35 miles north of the Arkansas line.
