Generator cutout wiring.

I bought a generator cutout and need help in hooking it up. The generator has F and A. Which wire does it go to? I assume that the one wire used goes through to the ammeter. Thanks, Ken

Ken, it really helps to know the tractor company, model, year, & battery polarity.

~If it's really a 2 terminal cut-out relay & not a 3 or 4 terminal voltage regulator the first thing you have to do is read the paper work that came with the cut-out relay... NOT ALL cut-out relays install with the battery terminal towards ammeter some are reversed so the [BAT] terminal is towards the generator & the [GEN] terminal towards the ammeter when used on a positive ground system [it should say in the paper work]

~Once you determine what the cut-out instructions say you need to install it in the wire that runs from the ammeter's NON BATTERY side post to the generator's [A} post {larger of the two}, it can go anywhere in that wire but it's base should be grounded to either the generator or tractor frame. The [F] post on the generator would then hook to the [resistor] or [Field] terminal on the headlight switch as the headlight switch controls the field strength & therefore the charging rate on most cut-out relay systems.

~Once the cut-out is installed & wired in you need to be sure the battery is installed & charged, then verify you have battery power on the ammeter side of the cut-out relay. Once you have battery power to the ammeter side of the cut-out relay [IT MUST HAVE BATTERY POWER TO THAT CUT-OUT RELAY TO CHARGE CORRECTLY]..You then need to polarize the generator,,,to do that, first ground the [F] post {smaller of the two} to the generator case, then momentarily touch a jumper wire from the [BAT] to the [GEN] terminals on the cut-out relay, you should see a spark, remove the jumper & you are done...

~If you have a 3 or 4 wire voltage regulator instead of a 2 wire cut-out relay, or don't understand anything in the above just post back.....

Ken, the cut out relay has 2 terminals, ONE goes up to charge the battery and may be marked BAT, and its usually wired to the load (non battery) side of the ammeter as you suspected which is the terminal that also supplies lights and ignition etc., with the ammeters other terminal (Battery supply side) being the only wire there leadign usually to the starter terminal or ungrounded battery post

The other terminal is wired to the armature post (larger of the 2) on the generator, and may be marked ARM or GEN. If its an original type for a John Deere positive ground tractor, it should be labeled that way and work okay assuming the tractor is still as original (positive ground) like all the 2 cylinder models were. Some after market cut out relays are bi polar, and can be used on either pos or neg ground systems, but the labels usually show how to wire for each system, which is merely a wire reversal for the different polarity.

NOW, if it uses a cutout relay and not a full fledged Voltage Regulator, it needs a generator field current control system, and thats usually a dual purpose combination light switch and field current controller. Thats where the Field post (smaler of the 2) on the generator gets wired to, and it (via the switch) receives a dead grounded when lights are on (high charge) or a ground via a resistor when lights are off (low charge).

If the generator needs polarized once all is hooked up, ground out the Field post on the generator and momentarily flash jump a wire from the BAT side of the relay over to its ARM side and it should produce a spark and youre done.
