My Model 60 has a chip broken off of the crankshaft on the splined end at the clutch drive plate and makes it run very noisy. I want to know if it can be fixed by welding it back in place and then grind it back down while it is still on the tractor without tearing-down the engine and removing the crankshaft.

I had a problem like this on a model B. The clutch drive disk was loose and the splines were worn on the crank shaft and inside the drive disk. I welded up the splines on the crankshaft with it still in the tractor. I made a jig that would let me accurately slide a die grinder along the crankshaft. It was made so that it could be adjusted for both the straight and the tapered portion of the spline. The die grinder I used was an electric craftsman model. I made a fixture that held the die grinder and would let me slide it accurately along a flat surface. I used a carbide burr in the die grinder with a squared off end. I was successful doing it this way but I did have to get a new clutch drive disk. When reassembled the clutch operated smoothly and I never had any further trouble with it.
