Hi Guys:

I have a buddy with a John Deere 690 B trackhoe. He's wondering what engine type is in it. He only said it had like a 4 or 5 digit number on there. Isn't there a designation with this many numbers that will designate how many cylinders the engine has and it's cubic inch? If you could please enlighten me on this numbering system, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

John

Deere engines typically are easy as they are a 4 digit system. The first digit is the number of cylinders. The next three are as follows:

1. english unit displacement 239, 380, 404, 466, 2. metric unit displacement, 029 (2.9l) 045 (4.5l)

a 6466 will be a 6 cylinder with 466 cubic inches
a 4045 will be a 4 cylinder with 4.5 l displacement.

Hope this helps
