Keith, sorry I gotta run soon, the oldest singer/songwriter son is playign n singing Mississippi Delta Blues n Old Country tonight with a different group and I gotta hear it, so I will be brief and post back more later. It appears you have a 3 brush generator and a light switch type generator field control circuit, so thats how Im proceeding for now. 1) The charge rate can be increased on those by loosenign the hold down screws (on the brush mountign generator plate) and rotating the 3rd brush to where its CLOSER to the other one. next to it on its side. You might try that first. 2) The way the gens output is regulated is the wire off the Field post on the generator runs to the dual purpose light switch, and it dead grounds the field for high charge when lights are on, but grounds it through a resistor on that switch for low charge when lights are off. 3) Make sure things: The Field terminal on the Gen is wired up to that light switch,,,,, ,, that on the cut out relay there's battery voltage present at all times on its BAT side (use a test lamp or voltmeter),,,,, ,,,,, that the Battery is installed POSITIVE ground and assumign the cut out realy is also a POS ground and/or is a dual polarity and is wired the right way, the belt is good and tight, the generator is well grounded (you might run a wire from the batterys grounded post down to the generator to make sure,,,,, ,,, and that the light switch is well grounded to the dash. 4) THINGS THAT MAY BE BAD: Its important that the light switch has a good ground. You might remove and wire brush its mount and the dash and nuts and terminals and see what happens. 5) Polarize it to make sure: Attach the FLD post on the gen to ground (case) with a wire and them momentarily flash jump a wire from the relays BAT side over to its GEN side or the ARM post on the Generator, and it should spark. 6) TROUBLESHOOTING a) With the belt tight,,,, gen well grounded,,,,,all wires in place,,,,, and battery voltage on the BAT side of the cut out relay,,,,, ,, start her up and see if it charges? b) If not, ground out (wire from post to case ground) the Field post on the generator and see if she charges then. If it does, the prob is in the wirign up to the switch,,,,, , or the switch itself,,,,, , or the switch is not well grounded. c) If no charge even with field grounded out, leave her running fast (leave field grounded) and jump by pass a wire around the cut out realy (connect its input and output together) and if she charges okay then, the realy may be bad, or is mis wired or wired in reverse polarity (see if it works reverse wired). 7 ) Other things: The usual path to charge is off the starter post, to and through the ammeter (BOTH sides must show battery voltage),,, to the BAT side of the cut out relay,,,,, ,, through the relay (closes when gens voltage higher than batterys) to the ARM post on the generator..... Be sure the switch is good and wired good and well grounded..... ... Be sure theres battery voltage at the cut out relay... Insrue good grounds and connections. NOTE the battery must first be good and not have any dead cells to take and hold a good charge. EVEN IF THE AMMETER DOES NOT WORK (it should swing to discharge when tractor off and lights turned on???) the batetry voltage should rise (near 7 on 6 volt or 13.5 to 14 on 12 volt)and light glow brighter at fast RPM if shes charging. 7) SUMMARY, adjust the third brush closer,,,,,cheack light switch ground,,,,, run at WOT and if no charge ground the field,,,, if still no charge by pass the cut out relay,,,,, if still no charge post back.
