I have a '51 JD A with a leaking inner axle seal. Does anyone have any idea how big a job this is to change one out?

Thanks

I just finished fixing the same problem on my 38 G project this morning.. It is a bit larger task then one thinks.. First make sure you have purchased all the necessary gaskets to replace EVERY ONE you remove..I purchased a gasket kit from JD that has them all.. You will need new seals for the axels and new felt seals as well.. DO NOT try to remove the felt retainers as suggested in the JD service manual, you will destory them.. As you wedge your axels out, (and they will have to come all the way out), they will let go and come out as well.. check all the axel bearings befor you re-install them.. I have found that most are OK. I know I'm forgetting something, But..!!

John:

The seal that is the problem is inside the rear housing. The seal leaks, and the oil runs down the length of the axle housing, saturates the felt dust seal, and drips out of the end.

You will have to remove the wheel, the rear housing, and the bull gear on the side you wish to repair. I think if you want it to stop the leaking immediately, you might need to remove the axle and clean the inside of the axle housing, or the residual oil might want to drip for sometime.

If you type in "axle seal" in the search function here, you'll find a lot of other information regarding this repair.
