Hi John, I like em to run smooth also, but with that fresh overhaul, I wouldnt worry quite so much unitl after she had a chance to seat in some actually. What are the valve lashes set at??? 0.020??? Too tight can affect performance and cause premature burn out. You asked about the "lag out of whack" and thats, of course, the difference between the initial start timing versus the run time advance ie lag (how much start timing lags run timing) angle. Have you any idea where either is set at now??? The lag is adjuted on the rear of the mag at the coupler and loosenign the hold down screws and rotating for approximately 25 BTDC, while the initial start timing is set so the mag fires out the top terminal to fire the left cylinder at TDC on its compression power stroke just when the flywheels Left Hand Impulse timing mark is at the 3 o clock position and passes by the flat mark on the tractors side. Loosen and rotate the mac CCW to advance or CW to retard. You might tweak the mags rotational timing and see what happens, but if the start timign is set too fast (fires too soon before 3 o clock) she may tend to kick back when starting. Its possible to use a timing light to see how far advanced the run timing is firing (lag agle setting) post back if you need info. With all that new stuff, she shouldnt be much of a problem, but let her run a while maybe. Have you adjusted the carbs top load and idle needles and see if that helps??? Is she throwing any black smoke out the stack??? You say it wont run smooth, if you remove the governors linkage to the carb and manually hold the butterfly by hand, will it stay nice n smooth??? If so, the governor and not the carb or ignition may be the problem. Is the governor arm linkage length adjusted so when the throttle is set wide open and its linkage removed from the carb, its about 1/2 hole short of being where it drops down in the carb throttle if you hold it also wide open???? That new carb shouldnt have a vacuum leak, but you might check for a vacuum leak by spraying carb cleaner or wd 40 or an unlit propane torch etc around the carbs mount or manifold etc and see if she smooths out or speeds up anywhere. Theres plenty more you could try, but I gotta run soon so see what happens and let me know. God Bless John T Nordhoff in Indiana
