Is this ring gear too worn out?

Here's a photo of a few of the teeth on the ring gear for a 48 A. I'm having trouble getting this gear to mesh with the drive gear on the starter - often times they grind together. Given its condition, can the teeth be cleaned up to work OK or am I going to have to remove the gear and flip it over? I'm not sure what a worn set of teeth look like, so please help out if you can. If they can be cleaned up, how do I go about it?

Mike, those teeth look pretty good. You probably should try a new starter drive on the starter & look at the starter for loose bolts, worn bushings, & the nose housing for wear & cracks.
~If the new starter drive still won't mesh correctly you will then have to use a grinder & remove that tooth end burr & maybe chamfer the tooth lead in a little more.
~Those ring gear teeth are not worn at all, just a little burr on the ends of the teeth. On a worn ring gear the teeth will be about 1/2 missing in the worn section.
~You really need to get your problem repaired now as those teeth won't last long if it's grinding..

From the looks of that gear it makes me wonder whether maybe your trouble is coming from the starter drive not wanting to slide over and engage. I would think that if the starter drive is ok, the flywheel gear is good enough.
