I just bought a 1950 JD D for a very resonable price and have a few questions about this model, thanks for any help in advance'
The tractor seems to be a hand start, but has a battery cable on the platform, no starter mounted, where does the starter mount and were very many tractors in the 50's still hand start?
The tractor does not have any brakes, can i put some on? Also would anyone happen to know where i might find a final drive cover and a grill? And the last question is what size front wheels and tires were standard. thanks for the help.

Van wish you were closer, I think I have everything you need except the nose grill. Let me check and see if I can spare the complete brake setup for a styled D. Does yours have a 3" square hole on the right side, about where your right foot would rest? its where the brake pedal will come up through,if not I have the sheet metal for that. You will need the drum, shaft and drive gear plus all the brake rigging.
Really think your D may have been shipped without brakes as I have been told that brakes were useless in the rice fields.
If I can be of help, just let me know.

PS I do have the rearend/trans covers too.

Bob,
thanks for the reply, yes there is a sqaure hole in the right foot board. The guy i bought the tractor from said that a lot of the flatland D's were shipped without brakes to save money as top speed in third was about 4mph. I also need a 18" front wheel. you can email me with the price
thanks Van, email [email protected]

Van, Congratulations on your purchase I also have a 1950 D, what's the serial number on yours? The starter mounts ontop of the crankcase. If it is an electric start there will be a bracket on the crankcase cover for it. Most tractors in the 1950's were electric start but some D's then were still hand start. If your tractor doesn't have any brakes it might be a rice tractor. Where did you buy it? Yes you probably can put brakes on it but you'll need a parts tractor will them or find them from a parts supplier. You could probably find a grill and final drive cover from a parts supplier. Front tires are 7.50-18. Good luck, Ryan

PS-- I am in the ozarks and brakes are not a option, probably was a south Ark rice tractor.

Yes I do believe its a rice tractor by the 16" rubber on the rear. Do the brakes mount on the side of the final drive where the cast plates are on each side? Grill is smashed and final drive cover is rusted trough but no water in final drive, also need 1 front wheel and tire as on side is 18 and other is 16. cant find any provisions for starter, cover is smooth, but tractor has pulley on fan shaft and used to have a amp gauge installed and also has holes for switches on inst panel. I was raised primarily a IH guy, but we had a 4020, just retired from AF last year and had the chance to buy back my dads two 300 farmalls (one is 56 LP), hauled them home last week so havent had time for D yet.
Thanks for answers Ser # is 188688

Van, D's were available with a differentail brake (standard) or optional turning brakes. The turning brakes were inside each final drive read axle housing. The standard brake used a drum below and to the back of the flywheel. There is probably a cover held on by three bolts on your tractor. The standard brake would be much easier to find and install. If your flywheel doesn't have a ring gear it's hand start. That's good that you found your dad's old tractors. Ryan

Thanks for all the D info, most helpful, Ill probably look for the standard brakes and yes the flywheel has finger grips on the inside of the back ring i guess i could find a starter and the correct starter flywheel, but its just a big toy and will only see limited actual work, so i think i will restore it original with the exception of the brakes (I live in the hills and found out years ago BRAKES ARE GOOD!) I got the tractor for 250, grill will probably cost me more. cant wait to here it run and smell it on kero
Thanks for all the help, talk to you later as the resto proceeds
