H clutch?

The clutch on my H disengages itself under load. Additionally, the ends of the operating bolts hit the pulley cover. If I try to tighten the adjusting nuts another 1/6th turn, then I can't pop it over center at all. Upon disassembly, the operating bolts, dog clutches, pins and toggles appear to have very little wear. Could the problem be that the clutch facings are just worn too thin? The rivets are not hitting yet, but the facings are down to about 1/8th inch thick. How thick are they when new? If it's not worn facings, where else should I look?

Leon, you have wear on something in there. Probably a little wear on everything.
~You didn't give us a tractor year [there is a difference between the 39 H clutch & the 40 & up H clutch].
~Because the toggles are so close to not going over center an additional 1/6 turn of the nut prevents the toggles from going over center.
~Make sure the anti-rotational pin for the sliding operating sleeve isnt worn & the hole in the sleeve that the pin rides in isnt worn. If wear is present drill it out & install a larger diameter pin [or weld the hole up & re-drill it smaller]. The toggle holes in the sleeve MUST be in line [& stay in line] with the pockets in the pivots or the toggles will move sideways as they try to go over center.
~Make sure the toggle holes in the operating sleeve arent worn deeper & at an angle [probably part or all of your problem].
~Make sure the pivot pins & holes in the pivots & pulley bosses arent worn & the holes arent worn oblong [that allows the pivots to move away from the pulley & not allow the toggles to go completely over center].
~Not sure if it will work on the H [I havent personally ever done it on the H],, but this works good on the other non Dubuque Deere 2-cylinder tractors. That is to machine about .020 or so from the pulley side face of the operating sleeve. That allows the operating sleeve to move outboard a little farther & allows the toggles to go over center farther. ~The bottom line is.your toggles arent going over center far enough so any load or movement on the clutch or hand lever is causing the clutch to dis-engage. When you tighten the adjusting nuts farther it causes the toggles to not go over center at all. Now to repair your clutch problem you need to determine what it takes to get the toggles to over center a little farther. My suggestion would be to start with the operating sleeve anti-rotational pin & work from there.
~Post back with questions as you go.

Thanks Clooney. It's a '41, #27394. I do see some rotation of the operating sleeve relative to the pulley, so I'll look there. I take it that the H733R gear is "simply" pressed on the shaft. Right? I'll pull it further apart and have a look at the D403R key and B426R drive pin
