Would a 7000lb gross tandem axle trailer be OK to haul a 50 on? ie It has two 3500lb axles. Would be hauling only short distances (100 miles or less)
Thanks for your thoughts, Roger

Just make sure you comply with the DOT regs where you are hauling and be DARN sure to have trailer brakes!

If the 50 weighs slightly less than 5,000 lbs and your trailer weighs slightly less than 2,000 lbs you should be just fine. Remember the tongue should be loaded with 10% or more of the total trailer load so you will have less than 6300 lbs on the two axles. Brakes on both axles are advised and recommended with good safety chains. Defensive driving is a must.

Roger, I haul my 4500 lb tractor on a 7000 trailer, have hauled about 6000 miles, much of it cross-country. You need good tires with about 45 psi in them. And it's a good idea to put blocks under the rear of the trailer when you load & unload. Otherwise, the weight of the tractor on the tail of the trailer will flatten the trailer springs, lift up on your hitch, perhaps even bend the tail of the trailer.

Roger, my 50 with no weghts or water in tires weighs about 4,600#. I haul mine on the same type trailer (rated at 5,000#) with no problem. If you don't have trailer brakes, be sure to brake carefully and anticipate your stops.

Roger, if you don't have brakes on that trailer, don't even leave home.

Roger,

Absoulutely, working brakes are the most important part of this. You might bend or break a spring but if a child chases his ball into the street in front of you or the trailer starts swaying, good brakes will be your salvation and could save a life and or property. We wouldn't want to loose anyone or, roll that 50 down an embankment. I think you would be fine with the weight. I haul 5600# on my trailer rated 5000# with two 3500# axles with no problems. I always put jack stands under the rear when loading and block the tires, both forward and backward, to keep from rolling.

Above all - Be Safe.

Larry
