I have a 4020 L.P. Gas tractor that I am planning to overhaul the engine. The numbers that were given to me by the mechanic was 8918D could this be the serial number of the tractor. He also provided me with number 1933170R, I don't know if this the serial number or some number off the block. I have been looking for an overhaul kit for this tractor but it is unknown whether the gas engine and the L.P. engine are the same. Any information regarding this matter would be truly be appreciated.

The propane engine is higher compression ratio than the gasoline engine. Be sure to get the right parts.

The # reading 1933170R is likely the serial number of the tractor. I suspect that the last "0" om it doesn't belong there and that the serial # should read 212R193317R. If it does, your tractor is a 1968. Check for the serial #, located on a plate just above and to the right of the rear pto shaft. The other number could possibly be the engine serial number.

I just overhauled my 4020LP this spring. I think the number you need for the overhaul kit, will be the engine # located by the starter. the # ending in R is the serial # of the tractor itself. Here is what I found out. The kit for the gas tractor will work on the propane tractor, but, you'll lose some compression, some power and it won't start as good. I had a friend of mine order the kit for me (he's a tractor mechanic) He got it from Abilene Machine. The kit, new pistons, liners, rod and mains, gaskets cost 900 and something (this was the propane kit, not the gas) I spend 700 and something on the head---but this was with all new valves and springs, guides, milling and what ever else it needed. (the gas kit, as I recall is a about 250 bucks cheaper--but I figured, I wanted mine to be as close to perfect as I could get it) anyway, all turned out great. I've used the old girl pretty hard this summer and its like having a totally different tractor. I changed the oil and filter after an hour of driving it around here, and it hasn't used a DROP of oil since. Starts 100% better, much more power than before and just sounds like million bucks. My advise is to go with the propane kit. Let me know how you come out moneywise please. I felt like I was spending quite a bit, but then I really like that tractor and I'm very happy the way it all ended up. My engine looked perfect internally, the block and crank were surprisingly good....crank looked letter perfect. Well, good luck in what ever you do. One more thing...I've noticed, since the overhaul, I really think I'm using less fuel.
