720 shifter problems

I finally, after 15-20 years of looking, found one of the two 720,s my dad bought new. It has several problems one of which is not being able to switch sides on the shifter. Can anyone tell me which part is worn that causes this? Also why do the 720,s have different shift patterns?

TRinIA,,, on your shifter problem...That could be almost anything in the trans or shift parts. The usual cause of the lever not going through the crossover gate is the Hi-Lo shift rail or shifter fork having a problem, or the interlock is broken, or something has come loose on it. About all you can do is pull the trans top cover & take a look.
~On the different shift patterns...Deere offered a few different gear sets for the 720. But the controlling factor on the shift pattern is whether or not it has the 8 MPH 5th gear set. The standard shift pattern has 1st gear in the upper L/H corner,,,the optional 5th gear has 2nd in the upper L/H corner..
