I have a 1950 G that nearly wears the battery down everytime I start it. I've checked the timing, the carb, fuel flow, spark and all seems ok. Once it starts it runs fine, idles good, etc. I checked the compression today and it's 85# on each cylinder. Is that acceptable compression? Owners manual, I & T or parts book are no help. Thanks in advance.

Larry,
Your compression sounds adequate and should not be the cause of hard starting. I would suggest you ensure the choke plate is actually going into choke position when you pull the choke lever. Your carburetor should be the DLTX51, and on the choke lever you will find a stamped-in line, which is parallel to the choke plate position. This helps ensure the choke operation is proper. But if it seems to be, I would remove the air intake and check to make sure the choke is functioning.

Other things to consider would be a broken impulse spring on a magneto - listen near the magneto when the tractor is turning over, there should be a distinct clicking sound twice each revolution. If that is not present you likely have a broken impulse spring and the tractor will be hard to start because of low spark output. If you have a distributor, a failing coil may not put out adequate high voltage when the input voltage from the primary is decreased during cranking.

There are other possibilities, but I would check these first, and post back if you need further help.
