HI: This is my first diesel,it's a 74 JD 410 and I am finding that it is hard to start. It seems to run fine when its running. It fires and then stalls, like it's losing it's prime.I know that diesels are hard to start when cold, but 90 degs. out it should start. There are no glow plugs.Starting fluid makes it fire but it sill stalls,I'm afraid to use to much starting fluid,I don't want to damage any thing.Does any one have any Ideas??? Thanks MIKE

A few things to look for. When you are cranking it over, is there white exhaust smoke coming from the stack or is there not much of anything coming out? White smoke will be unburnt fuel which would mean low compression. No or very little smoke would mean that there is no fuel available to fire the engine. If its the no smoke scenario then check the fuel system from the tank to the injection pump. If fuel is draining back out of the feed lines when not in use , then that will create this situation. Check the fuel filter and make sure it is secure properly. If it is the rectangular glass filter make sure the oring contacts on the inner portion are in good shape and there is no debris in that area. Make sure the large spring clip that retains that style filter has good tension. Another area that could be the culprit is a loose fitting at the fuel transfer pump where the line from the tank enters it. Its a 90 degree elbow and with time tends to loosen up. Sometimes all that is needed is to remove the fuel line at that elbow and give it another turn to tighten it into the transfer pump. By what you describe how it starts for a second and then stalls, I am tending to lean towards one of these problems . If it were low compression , then it wouldnt fire first.

Mike : I'm no expert , but my 1st inclination is to check or have checked, the fuel system pressure,if it runs well after warmed up & running. Good Luck!
