Under a heavy load, like plowing, my tractor will belch gray smoke out of the exhaust. Otherwise it starts and runs great. I'm pretty sure its not a carb problem. Several people have suggested I'm not getting suffienct air to the engine and that I need to clean out my air intake canister. Is there any test to see if this is my problem for sure? Is there any easy way of cleaning it without have to remove the steering shaft, hood, gas tank, etc... to remove the caniter for cleaning? Please Help!!!

52BMAN, are you losing any coolant?? Sounds like you may be getting a little water. John

No, I'm not losing any coolant. Do you have any other ideas? Thanks much!

Look for easy things first, check for a mud dobbers next in the intake.

Richard, What is your technique for checking for the mud dobbers? I will give it a try. Thanks for your help.

52BMan, you could try disconnecting the intake pipe where it fastens to the carb. Remove 2 cap screws, a gasket, & a breather line to the valve cover, then push the intake pipe aside, see how it runs. Also check the choke position by looking inside the carb. A common problem with late B's is the choke spring pins. The spring is on the choke shaft, under a little cup on the carb. The pins in the choke shaft put tension on the spring. When the pins wear out & 'jump' to the relaxed position, then the choke can flop partly closed. This causes black smoke under load.
