My 49 John Deere puffs smoke every now and then. Seems like a valve is not shutting all the way. Could my valves be to tight. Could a head job stop this. It has no carbureter problems, has a brand new carb. DLTX 71. Tractor runs good, and seems like all power is there.

Dr.Deere, depends on the color of the smoke. If it's blue & does it on over-run then suspect worn rings or a loose intake valve guide(s). If it's white suspect moisture in the crankcase or air cleaner.
~You might try an oil change & going to straight 30 weight oil to see if that helps the problem.
~If you can tell us under what color smoke, under what operating conditions, RPM & load it happens at we can get a little more specific on what's causing the problem..

My 43 "A" will puff out random white smoke at idle when I'm waiting for it to cool down. Not so much at faster idle though. Then it went downhill and started spewing antifreeze out the exhaust when I went to start it. 5 big bottles of Bar's stop leak and water for the summer and no smoke at all. Yeah, a head job could replace a leaky head gasket or find the crack responsible. You didn't mention the color of the smoke which is a vital symptom for online diagnosis.
