My husbands's John Deere 60 (gas) won't idle properly -- it misses -- He can't seem to set the carburetor properly. The compression is good. What could be the problem?

Several things will cause a 60 to idle roughly. >a vacuum leak caused by a leaky gasket, a hole in the carb, cracked manifold, etc. >excessively worn idle screws >improper valve clearance >timing. Try taking off one spark plug wire at a time and adjusting each cylinder independently. If that doesn't work, then start with the simplest things (check condition of the idle screws and rebuild carb if necessary, replace plugs and points, set timing, etc.)

might begin a slight war here but ,,, from past experience , I have yet to hear a deere run like they should with anything but a set of A C C88L spark plugs they can be a bit hard to find and cost me about 6 bucks a peice , worth it when I step on the starer of my 50 or 60 and they start right off and pop all day long and never miss a stroke !!!! mine arent " show" tractors , they still go to the field , only other thing it might be is pionts and condenser wont hurt anything , also be sure to use a wire core spark plug wire , the silicone cores dont work for me ,, hope I helped and you get the 60 to fire on both pistons , not too many sounds as sweet as that ,
