I had to leave my 47 "A" out in the rain for a couple of weeks and now water is in everything - the oil bath air cleaner, the carb, the crank case ( I haven't had the courage to check the transaxel!). Didn't they have to leave these machines outside once in a while or did they always keep them inside??? I can't believe how much water got in. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks, FSB

I've had water leak in under the governor and the crankcase cover, too. New gaskets solved the problem.

Maybe the newer the tractor, the more it leaks. :-) Our 1937 A hasn't spent a day inside since at least 1975, and we have never had any problem with rain water. It's been sitting next to our cabin since we built it, still runs like a charm every time we go to start it. We just put a can over the muffler. Sorry Fredct, I'm truly not trying to rub your nose in it, just sharing. Good luck.

Did you cover the air intake and muffler?
If your A is like my 1950 B.... I'd pull the entire air intake and filter off the tractor and clean it out. Mine was choked up with oily dirt. Cleaning it out revealed a hole at the very bottom below the air stack, I assume purposly put there to let rain water drain out. Otherwise any water in the air intake will go into the air filter. I actually drilled out the hole a bit bigger so I could get a rod in there to poke and prod. Then plenty of pressure washing I finally got all the crud out.

Another place for water to get in is where the clutch operating shaft goes in by the pulley. That hole points straight up in the air and is always well worn so lot of water can get in. From there it goes directly into the crankcase on A and B tractors.

From my observations it looks like Deere never meant for these tractors to be rained on or washed ever.
