Use plain water in the summer. Your problem will go away.

you didn't say the year or serial number of your MT, but i suspect it is one of the older ones. Deere had a problem with the location of the heat sending unit in the earlier tractors. It was in the top of the water manifold, where the water is the hottest. Later, they moved it to the back of the block for a more even temp. reading. If the bottom hose and block feel cool, don't be upset. Mine runs at 220, and you can hold your hand on the bottom hose. Check your year and location of the sending unit. E-mail if you need more info.

Jim, you sound normal for a thermo-siphon cooling system. The water won't circulate UNTIL it heats up so they do heat the water in the engine quickly.
~The block WILL be cool as there isn't any low water jacket in the M. The bottom of the radiator & radiator pipe should also be cool as that means the radiator is doing it's job & removing the heat from the coolant.
~The water moves slowly in a thermo-siphon cooling system so the radiator pretty well removes all the heat [at least while not working]...Take it out & run it under load for a while & see if the bottom of the radiator gets hotter..

The thermosiphon systems depend on a continuous loop of coolant for circulation. If coolant level drops to the point that it does not connect at the top of the radiator, then there will be no circulation. That may not be your situation, but regular checking of coolant level is critical.

Sounds normal to me. The thermal syphon cooled critters run hot. Mine pops along at 200+ on a hot summer day. As long as it doesn't boil over, you probably have a happy tractor.
