530 Belt Pulley Gets Hot

Been using a chipper on the PTO of my 530, so the tractor is stationary while the chipper is running. I left the hand clutch disengaged and noticed after awhile the belt pulley got pretty hot. Tried it with the clutch engaged next day, did not get hot. Is this normal, or do I have a clutch problem?

If the tractor is running and in neutral, I ALWAYS engage the clutch if possible. There is no clutch plate wear (generating heat) if they're all pressed together and spinning as one.

the bearing runs directly on the crankshaft. I've seen many of these cranks damaged by lack of lubrication and allowing them to run long periods of time on the bearing. I would recommend taking the clutch and assy off and repacing the bearing with never seize or hi temp grease.

TJ-NC, a little hot would be normal [depends on how much the clutch plates & brake drag when released]. Real hot means you might have a dry bearing or warped clutch plates.
~You really shouldn't run that tractor with the clutch disengaged for extended times like that, that is real hard on the clutch release fork & pulley bushing & bearing. Always re-engage the clutch with the trans in neutral when you are using the tractor as stationary power...

Clooney, thanks. I looked in the Operator's Manual and didn't see anything about leaving the clutch disengaged, but it makes sense not to do it for long periods. The brake is not dragging, so the heat is coming from inside. Clutch seems to work OK, but I have noticed it's getting harder to shift gears. Might this be related? Thanks for all your support for JD owners in this forum...you're a walking encyclopedia!
