In replacing the crankshaft in my 420 I had to remove the oil pump.Unforunatly the camshaft moved and now I am out of time.In the service manual they talk about a special tool that you insert in the distrubuter hole and align with DC markings on the flywheel with #1 at TDC.I dont have this special tool.Does anyone have another method? Also are the points closed or open at TDC?
Thanks

Tim, to answer your last question, when the points open on high cam lobe is when the coil fires, so at approximately TDC, but depending on how far before TDC the timing is set, the points are on or near high cam lobe and the rotor tip should be lined up with whatever cap tower leads to the plug thats then supposed to fire. At TDC, therefore, on a pistons compression power stroke is near when the points should be open on high cam and the rotor tip lined up to fire that cylinders plug. John T

Tim, that special tool just makes the job easier. You can just look in the distributor hole & install the pump so the slot is in the correct position [slot running fore/aft with the narrow side out], with the crankshaft at the proper position [number one piston at TDC compression]. ~It will probably take a couple of tries as the pump gear rotates when the pump is pushed in..

with a timing light...there is a little hole on the clutch cover open it up and use the timing light. marks should line up if not turn the distributor till they do
