After having my valves reground for the second time, the machinist commented that the intakes were blued from excessive heat. What would cause this? The cam and magneto timing are perfect.

After having read your post, the thought occurs to me....based soley on a similiar comment made a couple of months ago by an automotive machinist working on a head of mine....I'm wondering if these guys typically find fault with the machinist that worked on it before them.
"who ever worked on this head had it all "fouled" up.... Makes me wonder.....

Lash too tight, seat too narrow, advanced cam timing, coolant passages full of corrosion, lean mixture and continous operation at 100% power?

Did you ask the machinest his opinion on what would cause heating and subsequent "blueing" of the valves?

Jon, if it's just the intakes & not the exhaust valves [your problem is more common on exhaust valves] look for worn valve guides, tight valve lash, improper seat or valve face angle, weak valve springs, too thin valve edge, or leaking valves...

I haven't heard that term before, but perhaps he's talking about the valve edges, which may become discolored if they're too thin, resulting in them getting hotter than normal?
Interesting, though. Maybe someone else will have other ideas.
