G problems

It took me about a year to restore my 51 G. So I finally took it out to a plow day this past Saturday and found out I've got more problems.

1. The ammeter shows a discharge part of the time and charge at other times. The generator has been rebuilt for 12V positive ground. I was told there was still something wrong in the voltage regulator. There is also a spark whenever connecting the hot cable to the battery.

2. The steering is really tight and hard to steer. I put the entire set of shims from John Deere to fix this but no change.

3. The oil pressure always stayed between L and M and really closer to L. I had already turned the adjusting nut a couple of turns on top of the filter housing to compensate for this but no change. I hand checked the lines in the crankcase and they seemed to be tight.

4. Also, the clutch has a lot of play in the shifting and it looks like I'll need to get new bushings around the fork, since it isn't giving me that distinctive pop when engaging. Not sure where to get these. I guess you find out a lot the first time you put her under a load. Any help or information on this is appreciated.

JD-G,

When you were doing the overhaul, did you inspect the oil pump intake screen? Those things can get really nasty after 50 years. Remember, while the overall area of the screen is considerably larger than the intake for the pump, that doesn't always ensure adequate flow area. Highly viscous (high shear) fluids behave across a screen like they would across any orifice(the effective flow area to open area is roughly 0.65:1 or worse). Just minor plugging of the screen can be a problem. I started out between L and M (closer to M) to between M and H (still closer to M) by cleaning mine.

Good Luck!

Rob

Hey JD-G, #2. Have you moved the eccentric gear that the steering worm drives to different positions? #3. Have you removed the oil pressure guage and turned it over a couple of time to ensure no line restriction or checked guage to believe the reading? #4. You have adjusted the three clutch castle nuts to know that you can't pull the clutch latching lugs over center to get the "pop" and lock it in. It takes about 80 #(can't remember the exact amount) of clutch stick pressure to do it. Good Luck.
Easy

#1. I haven't moved this gear any, but I'll give her a try. #2. If I remove the guage from the line, how would I know if the right amount of oil is flowing out? I thought about getting another guage that is calibrated in numbers to let me know the pressure reading.

Thanks.

JD-G, Any flow would indicate that it's not plugged. Old guages can be unreliable and sticky and their movement gives me comfort that oil is flowing. I sometime swap them around with another tractor guage that I think is good. The oil gear pump is positive displacement and the dump valve controls the back pressure. You may close the dump valve a little more. easy

an oil pressure guage with numbers would probably be scary on these old 2 cylinders, they don't run much oil pressure when healthy.
