A friend of mine, pulled the fiywheel off his Hand Start A. He said the flywheel was very tight. He fixed the oil leak on the crankshaft. When he went to put the flywheel back on, the flywheel wouldn't tighten back up. He said it was not loose at all when he took the flywheel off, cann't figure out why the flywheel will not tighten back up. I told him it could be the bolts are stretched. I just don't know. Any help would be a appreciated

You got to get those bolts down really tight! I use a cheater bar on my socket drive to get mine tight enough. It sounds to me though like he lost some shims out of there.

Re-install the two bolts, making sure the threads in the bolts and nuts are clean and lubed with WD-40 or some such. If you think the bolts are stretched, use one or two flat washers. The bolts must be TIGHT. If the wheel still isn't tight, it must have had shims.

Rooster in Tenn,
Is it possible there were some thin shims stuck between the flywheel and crankshaft which are now missing? This was not unusual to compensate for wear - check for anything from brass strips to coffee can strips.

I ask him if some shims came out of the flywheel, He said. he didn't see any thing fall out. He said the crank and flywheel look good, no ware marks on the crank or flywheel. I just don't know.

You might also check to see if he center punch marked the splines to make absolutely sure he has the flywheel in the exact position on the crankshaft. Sometimes people don't realize when they pull those JD flywheels off thay are timed. JD doesn't really "mark" the shaft and flywheel for correct position, I center punch both the end of the crank, and the matching spline on the flywheel before removing. 1 tooth off can make a big difference. If the flywheel has "LH impulse" marked on it, that should be pointing directly toward the rear @ 90 degrees from vertical, with the left piston at the top of the stroke, on the compression stroke.
