I have a 1961 JD 3010 LP, it's in very good shape and and runs very good. I've only had it a year, but it doesn't start as good as the regular gas or diesel tractors I've owned. Any suggestions on getting it to start better>

What would something like this be worth ?

Randy, follow everything G-MAN has said, one thing I've run into is that the hydralic pump was pumping more than normal during startup, either buy a 3pt. that settled and was trying to raise during startup, (you can just leave the 3pt. lever down during startup. Or other hydralic problems. Disconnect the pump coupling from the pulley and see if the tractor starts any better. chris also I think JD made a solenoid to destroke the pump during startup if I remember right

If your cranking speed is low, they can be a bear to get started. I'm working on a 4020 LP with that problem right now. Make sure your batteries, cables and starter are all up to snuff. Also check the compression (make sure cranking speed is correct during the compression check) and make sure it is within specs. It should probably be around 170 psi or so. Make sure you don't have more than about 10% variance between cylinders. One other major thing to check is the condition of your ignition system. Make sure the points are adjusted correctly, and that the plugs, wires, cap and rotor are in good shape. The installation of a Pertronix electronic ignition set-up will vastly improve starting and throttle response, as well as fuel economy if the engine is in good shape. We've had such good luck with the Pertronix kits waking up spark-ignition New Gen tractors that it's becoming standard for us to install them on tractors with hard-starting complaints. The 4020 mentioned above will be getting one. While you're in the distributor (the Pertronix kits are easy to install), make sure your advance mechanism is working freely, and double check your timing. All of that should pretty much fix up any hard starting LP tractor. As far as value, I couldn't say, but the New Gens are becoming collectible, and they're still excellent working tractors, so it's probably worth hanging on to. Everybody wants the diesels, so maybe when they're all bought up, the spark-ignition tractors will be next for escalating values. Some of the versions of spark tractors are quite rare as it is, especially in the later 20 series years.
