The axile seals on our '52 A are both leaking. Wondered if the felt seals are designed to keek dirt out or would replacing them stop the leaks. I should metion that the tractor sat for 4 or 5 years and I am guessing the seals may have dried out? Any ideas would be appreciated.

If it has sat for 4or5 years it maybe overfull with water from condensation. you might try draining the rear end grease down, and the drain the axle housings by removing the last bolt before you get to the bottom of the housing where it bolts to the transmssion case. that would be on the front side of the axle. There is a passage to drain the housing there.

Ralph is correct. The outer felt seals are only there to keep dirt out of the outer bearing, which is lubricated by grease. The lip seal at the inside of the housing keeps the trans/differential lube from getting into the axle housing ends. Curing the problem will require removal of the bull gears and axles. I had good results on my "G" by letting the outer axle bearing "remove" the seal retainer as the axle came out. The service manuals show removing them with a chisel, but that dates back to when they were still available new. The I&T manuals do a pretty good job of explaining this whole procedure, especially as there are no JD service manuals available for the "A".

The felt is a dust seal. The oil seal is at the inboard end of the axle. Go the the top of the previous page and search on "felt seal" and you will get a better discussion than I can give you. The oil seals and felt seals are available from JD, but the steel felt retainers are hard to obtain. Take care when removing them. Back cover and axles need to be removed for replacement.
