Am going to install the gov. on my early AR. It has no timing marks on the gears. Do I just line up the lefthand impulse mark and make sure that my mag drive is horizontal? Thanks to all.

Mark, the easy rule of thumb is, the slot in the flywheel & the slot in the mag drive flange should ALWAYS be in the same position.... When the flywheel slot is running fore/aft the mag drive flange should run fore/aft also [assuming the flywheel is installed correctly].. Because the flywheel & the mag drive flange turn the same direction & speed they should always be pointing the same way no matter where the flywheel is rotated.

~If you have a Wico C or X [XH] mag it will always be timed correctly even if the #1 piston is on the exhaust stroke. As long as the L/H impulse mark on the flywheel is lined up with the case mark [no matter what stroke] & the mag rotor is pointing to the top wire tower... Now if you have the original 1/2 speed gear drive mag you will have to install it at L/H IMPULSE mark [on compression] with the mag rotor pointing to the first plug wire tower contact in the mag rotation, or there's a good chance the second cylinder might not fire..[look inside the cap as the internal contacts don't always match the external towers]....

Thats about it Mark, so long as the flywheel is on the right spline and all else is right, when that left hand impulse timing mark on the flywheel is at 3 o clock in line with the side mark, the left hand cylinder should be at TDC and the female drive slot in the governor shaft that drives the mag should be flat horizontal fore and aft. Then all you gotta do is insert the mag and it will either be right or 180 out. If you want it NOT 180 out, at the point described above, the left cylinder would be at TDC on its compression power stroke (NOT exhaust) and the mag set to where its ready to fire the left cylinder out the top terminal if you want her as she was original. Then the right cylnder fires on its power stroke TDC 180 degrees later out the other terminal.
