I am posting this for my uncle who has a 6X4 Gator that the clutch has gone bad in. He is trying to get the clutch off of the crankshaft but cant get it to budge. He has a puller on it and has applied some heat and still no luck. Is this a common problem? Can it be removed without breaking it or having to cut it off? He would like to repair it if possible. He thinks the spring in the center is broke is all.

Any ideas?

Any help would greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Greg F.

You need a special puller. It threads in the end and pushes on the crankshaft. If you try using a jawed puller, or a harmonic balancer puller you will break it. Take the engine/clutch to a dealer and they will probly pull it for $10. Small price to pay for not ruining it.

Make sure that the bolt out of the center is removed, have to take off the rear wheel and put in a socket with extension through the frame to get at the center bolt. Also as I recall you have to have a special tool from deere to make it come off.

The engine is out on the bench and the bolt is out at least part of the way. He is using it to push on with the puller so that it won't hurt the threads(i think). I will check and get back. He may also post to this as well to help better explain what is going on. He will post as D.C.

Thanks,

Greg F.

Greg, by all means run it by a dealer, only takes a second to get it off with the puller bolt.
Be sure to note the paint color on the spring if you're really going to atempt to repair it. ( there are three color choices, blue, yellow & white.) I would advise replacing the clutch if the spring has gone out, the ramps and fingers should also be pretty well worn too. If you do take it apart, watch out! even if the spring is broken, or weak it's still a very strong spring, and will hurt you !
