39 B Mag Question

I have just completed rebuilding my 39 B. I didn't note the spark plug cable positions when I tore it down. I put it back together with the left hand cylinder wired to the top mag pole. It would not start & the flywheel would often roll back. I checked the top mag pole using a copper wire. It was not firing at the left hand impulse mark. I moved the copper wire to the bottom mag pole and it fired at the correct left hand impulse mark. It appears the mag was set up to fire the LH cyclinder off the lower pole, & the RH off the top pole. Will the tractor run set up like this, and why was it done this way? It is reversed from what the service manual says. Should I reverse them back? Thank you.

Thanks gentlemen. Swaped the cables and she fired off and ran just fine. My may is an XH-1042 so it fits into your 180 degree swap is ok category.

It is a little rough now and then with an ocassional miss so I should probable try switching it back some time.

Thanks

Good Morning Robert, To answer your questions, yes it will run that way "left cylinder out bottom terminal and right out top" if its a Wico Model C or XH Magneto that was installed 180 out of time where it mates with the female drive slot in the governor shafts end. That's because those model mags fire at BOTH the pistons TDC's on power OR exhaust strokes.

The factory settign for those mags was the left cylinder to fire out the top terminal and the right cylinder out the bottom, however. It was a commom mistake when those mags were removed and reinstalled to get them back in 180 out of time, but a simple top and bottom wire reversal would make them run. Where the mags male drive coupling fits into the governor shaft end theres just a full slot and they will fit back in either correct or 180 out.

If you want to make her fire the left cylinder out the top and its a Wico C or XH series mag, you need to remove the mag and rotate the flywheel 180 and then re insert the mag or leave the flywheel alone and rotate the mag 180. Just get her back on 180 opposite from where she is one way or another. It may be necessary to rotate the flywheel off the exact 180 so the coupler will fit into the governors drive slot depending upon where the mag wind and trip assembly is at, but that will be easy to figure out with the mag off.

Heres the timing procedure if youre startign from scratch:

When the left hand (flywheel side) cylinder is at TDC on its compression power stroke, the Left Hand Impulse mark on the flywheel is in the 3 o clock position in line with a flat mark on the tractors side and the mags initial start timing should be set to trip and fire the mag (top terminal fires left cylinder) right when those marks pass by each other. Also, the female slot in the governor shafts end should be flat horizontal fore and aft then if the flywheel and crank to cam and cam to governor gears are ALL in time. Loosen the mag and rotate it CCW to advance when she fires or CW to retard.

If youre tryign to set a Wico C or XH mag to do that, you have to rotate the rear coupler to where the leadign rotor tip is to the top of left and before the caps top terminal and ready to wind the spring when you insert it into the governor. That requires you get the flywhell where I said above, but then rotate it backwards maybe so the mag will fit into the slot. Then when the flywheel is rotated forward and the spring winds it should trip to fire out the top terminal at the timign marks.

If the mag is not one of those Wicos like some of the Faribanks Morse etc., they only fire at the power stroke TDC and NOT the exhaust and a simple top and bottom wire reversal wont make them run if 180 out. On those, go back to my basic timing above and install them so the top terminal fires the left cylinder at its compression power stroke TDC and then the right cylinder should fire its power TDC 180 later.

As an electrical engineer I can come up with no reason why a Wico wont perform the same if 180 out with its wires reversed, but a good buddy and good mechanic I know and respect, Ol M L Aylward of Missouri (he posts on here) swears they run better if in the right way????

I hope this helps and answers your question. Post back any more questions and let me know how you came out. Good Luck n God Bless

Robert, it all boils down to the mag type you have...

~If you have a Wico C or X [XH] then all you have is the mag installed on the governor 180 out of time as those Wico C & X mags fire EACH spark plug EVERY TIME the piston comes to TDC... SO,,, if you have a Wico C or X mag just turn the flywheel until you hear the mag snap, then pull the mag out, then either turn the flywheel [OR mag impulse cup] 1/2 turn & reinstall the mag. That will allow the wires to be installed on the mag with the proper L/H wire on the top tower.

~If you have the Wico X or C you can also leave the mag the way it is now with the wires reversed with the L/H wire in the bottom tower, it will run just as good that way as all you have is mag installed 180 out. The engine fires at 180/540 [540/3=180] so it won't know the difference.

~Now if you have a gear reduction mag [that's what your B originally came with] it's a horse of a different color, those gear reduction mags MUST be installed correctly or one or the other sides will fire ONLY on the exhaust stroke.

~If you have a non Wico C or X [XH] mag post back with the mag make & model & we will guide you through the installation & set up of your particular mag
