Just finished a 38' B and the motor seems to "stick", you can hardly turn the flywheel, but after you move it just a little its fine, starts and runs good, doesn't get hot and has good oil pressure. All I did to the motor was hone the cylinders with a straight bar hone just enough to break the glazing, and set up the rod's. At first I thought I got the rods to tight but their fine. When I honed it I did the cross hatching a little more then others I've done, since the guy I did it for is only going to use it in parads and I thought this would help it break in better. Do I need to go get this thing and tear it apart again or does it just need a hard days work it break in the rings good? Any help is greatly appreciated, as I'm stumped on this one.

JDBert, while you could just be feeling those rings sticking in that new cylinder cross hatch. It really sounds like you [might] have a tight bearing. That is the common feel of a tight bearing
~To be sure, pull the crankcase cover & slowly rotate the crankshaft while moving each rod side to side, if you get to a point where a rod is a little sticky moving side to side you have found your problem. Those crank journals wear egg shaped on the old 2-cylinder Deere's & it's hard to get a good rod or main bearing setting on a used engine. [Plasti-Gage doesnt work worth a darn on a worn crank].
~On the main bearings, those are hard to check with the rods still attached to the crank so about all you can do is run it for a while & feel the L/H bearing housing for getting hot & just trust that the R/H isn't too tight. The good news is with an egg shaped crank journal it still lets oil to the bearing at the loose spots so at least they don't seize too easily..

Bert,
If you're sure the wrist pins and rod ends are to spec, and you did a good job setting the end gap on the rings -- your good day's work to let the rings mate with all that cross hatching sounds like the best fix
