Today I finally got around to pulling the battery box and platform on the 630 that the battery blew up on last week. Gave it a good rinse with the high pressure washer and gave it a good bath of bakeing sota, rinse and then GUNK engine cleaner and another rinse as there was battery acid everywhere when it blew. We have PRAGO rock teeth on the JD post hole digger. (Same teeth the utitity co's have on there diggers. We were digging in solid rock and the digger was bouncing on the rock causing the whole tractor to do a circle dance. The battery that blew was a heavy duty 12 V INTERSTATE that has more cranking amps then the two JD stock batteries. It just fits crossways in the battery box so the stock battery hold downs will not work. The battery was just in the box. Has been that way since I've been using those batteries.(Many years).
The tractor doing the dance caused the battery to bounce causing wear the POS cable insalation just behond the post from rubbing on the lip of the edge of the battery box. Thats where the spark came from. (630 has ALT and is NEV ground). Guess I'll make a battery hold down. Still haven't got to La Crosse to get a new INERSTATE battery. Used the 630 haying with the $39.00 WAL MART battery out of the 1946 CJ-2A JEEP.

The batt can not take that pounding. Get one smaller 12 v batt with 650 cranking amps. What happens is the plates or joints brake makes a spark inside and you know what happens.

Tarp straps work for a battery hold down. They are inexpensive and keep the battery from bouncing around.

I have had good luck in preventing cable wear by running it through some auto heater hose accross the wear spots and clamping or tie wrapping that down. If you can't get a free end to run through the hose you can split the hose lengthwise, put it around the cable and tie wrap it closed. Works great for me.

Mike: I've had good luck in using threadable round rod and use mig welder and spot it to the bottom of the new batter box. Make a frame from small angle and have never had problem holding battery in place. Good luck.

Where are you located to have soil like that? I have to fence 50 acres into three fields and protect to streams from cattle tramping through this year. Was looking at those hydraulic drive post hole diggers that are clamped onto the loader bucket. Should beat replacing shear pins or using a prybar in the u-joints to back out from under a rock.

The "coulee" country of west central Wisc. nearest town is Melvina pop 98. Mailing address is Cashton. We are half way between the Mississippi river bluffs of La Crosse (23 miles) and Wild Cat Mountain State Park (20 miles). We are 1 mile long and 3/4 mile wide and not a flat spot on the whole place. Rocks and bluffs is why we ranch and not farm. Have places you can only get to on horseback. We have a stock JD 31 PTO 3 pt post hole digger, but put on the PREGO teeth. (BEST BUY!!) They weld on to the stock auger. I plan to replace the PTO with a hyd orbit motor. We like to run the post hole digger with the JD 430 crawler as that has down pressure on the 3 PT. Over the last 30 years we have fenced and cross fenced the whole place except for 900' we are working on now. Some of those green treated posts we put in 30 years ago are rotted out and need replacing. We now buy 6"x8' posts treated the same as railroad ties. Have some of those in the corral now for 20 years and they are still solid. For cow/calf we go treated posts on the ends and on the knolls and dips, steel every 8' and 7 strands of barb wire
