howdy folks im new here, i have a problem with my 1950 model B JD. was bush hogging today and it is making an intermittant grinding noise, seems to be coming from the clutch area, i have never been into the clutch on this tractor, have owned it about 7 years. the noise kinda sounds like the noise a shaft would make if held against a bench grinder, like i said, it comes and goes. anyone have any idea what this might be? i was wondering if the clutch drive disc could make this kind of noise, or could it be a shaft bearing? i have a feeling that it is an expensive sound...any help would be appreciated.

The clutch can be dissasembled easily but you need the manual to do it right. Open it up, take apart and see what the problem is. Not a rocket scientst job!

I have had mine off several times...I wonder if the clutch pad is falling apart and you get a little piece in there, or the thrust bearing is leaving you..trouble with those is they are hard to get to to grease (I think).

Hey on the right hand side of the tractor just ahead of the right brake drum is a small cover with 2 bolts holding it on. This is the cover for the bearing on the first reduction gear. Every B I've ever worked on has this bearing shot. A 20 minute fix and a $10 bearing. Its worth checking out.

thanks for the replies fellas, i wonder if either of these possible problems would be making the type of noise i described? on the clutch shaft itself, where the shaft comes out of the side of the engine, i am assuming there is a bearing there, would that be hard to replace?, a major tear-down?

i got the clutch apart and it shows wear, but not quite down to the rivits, so im sure im not getting my grinding noise from there. am gonna replace the pulley bearing, but im not sure that it is the problem either. guess i'll put it back together and run it till the danged thing blows up, then maybe it will be easy to find the problem.
