I was using my tractor when it became very hard to steer to the left. I checked the pressure in a right turn it goes to 900 psi. Turning left it is about 600 and then falls off to 0. According to the book it should be about 1200 psi. It looks like it has suddenly developed a leak. I have not done a vane test yet. I took the steering valve assembly apart. It looks like new inside.I was wondering how critical are the springs as the one on the steering adjustment shows some wear. This is a black dash tractor 176xx sn. The whole steering mechanism had been resealed when I bought it in "99". Any ideas would be appreciated. I will not be working on it today as it is our 50th wedding anniversary. Thanks

Hilltopper, you might let the tractor cool off & see if you get the steering back, if not suspect a broken vane pin. [did the problem start after a hard left turn?]
~You really should do a vane leakage test as that will point out a vane area problem, or something else, [no sense in tearing the top gear apart if the vanes are by-passing all the oil]... With that oil pressure falling off to 0 on a L/H turn you are loosing the oil pressure in the L/H side somewhere & it would probably be in the vane area as the same pressure is used up to the steering valve so it would probably be from the steering valve down to the vanes. Not much except the vanes will cause a problem in that area...
~On those springs? I presume you are talking about the flow control spring? While wear sure doesn't help it you still should be able to adjust the flow control to get it to operate..

Clooney, i was pulling a fertilizer spreader in rough pasture land. I was making 40' turns with it when it suddenly became hard to turn to the left. It had cooled when I ran the pressure test. Next morning I pulled the steering valve and cleaned it. It found no sign of any problems here. I reinstalled it and tried to center the valve. It is some better, but I do not believe it is possible to balance out the steering effort. I have to set it to pull to the left to get it to turn left with power. Something in there seems to be very tedious to get right. I do not know what else it could be but something messed up in the vane area. Thanks

Chuck, those are the vanes in the lower pedestal that apply the hydraulic power to the steering shaft. They are really square pistons. See red arrows....

You probably broke a bolt or two holding the moveable vane to the steering shaft in the front pedestal.
