I finally got a wooden grass board made for my #5 mower. Now I'm trying to decide what type of finish to use on it. I have been thinking about just using some spar varnish. Probably not original but might look sharp. What would you do?

If you really want to draw fire from the insidious correct police and insure that none of them are happy feel free to paint it Allis Chalmers orange (!) .or would that be just plain evil? :)

If I remember my fathers # 5 correctly, it was natural finish i.e a thin coat of varnish. I'm not sure but what the # 8 which replaced in the late 50's or early 60's didn't have some varnish on it as well.

I had a #5 and then a #8 before we got the 350's. My old brain cells recall Varnish on the wood board, the stick was green and the medal parts where it mounted on the mower were also green. Weren't replacement boards from JD the same for both the #5 and the #8?

I agree that a naturally finished dividing board would look good. However, I looked through an old sales brochure dated February 1953, and all the illustrations there show the board as being red. The trademark shown on all these illustrations is the one from the 1937 to 1950 time frame (deer leaping over log), but this brochure might have just been updated from an older one. All the tractors shown are late styled A's and B's.

I'd say either spar varnish or red - either will look nice, and both will probably bring comments from the "correct police".

I had a friend give me a grass board he found while bird hunting. I believe it is from a #5. Still has the original decal on it & it is natural colored. I've got it hanging on the shop wall.
