anyone ever put a 3 point hitch Ford 515 7 foot sickle mower on the back of a 420 U? I have a chance to buy one cheap. Seems like the only problem would be how to stabilize it-keep it from moving from side to side. If anyone knows about hooking it up, I would really appreciate your advice...Thanks

I have a 430 U and have fought the anti sway thing for a long time. My uncle had the tractor and at one time got a JD setup that went over the drawbar ant had one arm that went to each of the lower 3 point pins. It has a box type setup that goes over the drawbar. It works but is cumbersome and you have to extend the drawbar. I have the sway chains on either side but they really do no good. I was not able to shorten them enough to prevent sway. I did try putting a small chain binder on the chains and that worked but I don't know for how long it would have. Problem is it was really tight when mower was up but loose wehn on the ground. My last experiment was to get adjustable sway bars, they are made by speeco I think, anyway on the 430 at least there are 2 places where you can hook up inner end of 3 point arms. Mine were in the outer position. I tried to change them to the inner one but the PTO is offset to the left and I couldn't put the pin in. I therefore used a pin on the inner hole, hooked up the sway brace to it and put it over the lower 3 point pin. On the other side I use a solid mettal bar from the inner hole on the drawbar support to the other 3 point hitch pin. I think a person could use the solid bar sway braces as sold for ford type tractors. If the inner end of the sway bar is not at the same height as the inner end of the 3 point arm, you will have problems with it being tight or loose at the top or bottom of travel. If you have other questions e mail me. This has been a problem I have considered for several years.

I am guessing you want to limit the side to side sway. seems to me my 430, that I used to have, had sway chains that went to the bolts where you pin your drawbar to one side or the other, or you could use chains or make stablizer bars like the fords use that go from the axle housing mounts under the fenders to the pins in you 3pt. arms holding the mower on. That type of bracing would be easy enough.

I don't know if this would work, but could you try using stabilizing/limiting chains like you might use with a brush mower. When I use the brush mower, I use chains that limit how far down the mower can go. Takes the weight of the mower off of three point hitch and on to the chains. I usually criss-cross the chains and this eliminates side to side sway when the mower is in the cutting position. Does not elimate sway when mower is raised. Just a thought. Good luck.
