I repaced the original Edison mag with spark advance timing on my 1929 "D" with a later model mag from a styled "D" that does not have manual spark advance. Will my early "D" run ok with this mag? Thanks Mark

Mark,
Your tractor should run fine when under some load, but I believe it will not idle as well as with the old manual advance/retard. The D's would idle better with the magneto retarded, ie, firing near TDC. When under load, the timing would be advanced for best operation. Your old mag had adjustable timing (by moving the lever adjacent to the throttle) from 0 to about 35 degrees, while your replacement is either 0 or (about) 35 degrees - nothing in between.

Mark, it should. You didn't give us the mag type but if it's a styled D mag it's probably either a Wico C or XH...Both of those mags have a built in spark advance that reverts to a running timing of somewhere around 25-30 BTDC at slightly over 250 RPM..
