Even if the problems are ignition, it can't hurt to locate and clean that gas filter. Dad's gas 2020 had mystery stalling for months until he found the filter hidden in the carb inlet fitting. It wa sfull of loose flaky stuff that would on occassion pack tight and block fuel flow.

Rich,
Just 'cause I'm a natural cheapskate -- before you buy a solid state ignition, did you change the condensor when you changed the points? A bad one can cause the kind of problem you're having.

Also, second thought is check for fuel starvation. Crud in the gas tank is a gift that keeps on giving, it seems. Usually a good test is when it starts missing, if you pull out the choke and it clears up -- it's just not getting enough fuel.

Good luck with the 1020 --

Rich,
If you are guessing ignition trouble, coils can act up when warm, do you get a good blue spark when it's hot? or is it kind of yellow. I've also had my fair share of poor condensors file up a good tractor. Recently I went to a electronic ignition from Genesee Products, on a gasser here at home after all the great reviews here on th forum. You won't regret it. The old points ignition is fine too. as many here will attest but the electronic is more burden free. This is all assuming an ignition problem
