My new to the family 530 seems to have a little slippage in the pto so I pull out my owners manual and proceed to adjust. a couple of things came up and I was curious to others opinions.

The rod with the lands and grooves is not there is this a problem, and can you still get them? I used a cleaned welding rod and a scribe to get my measurements.

The PTO clutch housing was full, looks like the seal to the rear is leaking, a nice mud colored oil byproduct came running out.
1) will this heavy oil cause slippage?
2) is this seal replaced from the pto sideor the rear side? I would guess the pto side.
3) I don't really want to do it now winter is a better time for me, would it be all that bad to over fill the pto with the 10w oil my manual calls for to keep the rear oil out?
4) I need my service manual yet does any one have the 1-800 number for them close by I can't seem to find it ,I know I saw it in GMag.
5) When tightening the clutch pack does it make the rod measurement longer or shorter?
6) When I do go in to replace that seal would you recommend clutch pack replacement?seems like I might be right there.
7) the extra heavy oil that leaks in would that tend to cause pto shaft drift when not engaged?

Thanks again
WjW

p.s. F.I.T. Thanks for the thpoughts on the lye I figured as an emulsifier it would work well on the oil/ grease. I just wasn't sure it would penitrate the rubber in the latex paint. I'll give it a go.

WjW, you ask....

1) will this heavy oil cause slippage?.....The actual heavy oil probably won't directly cause slippage but the gear oil itself will cause the plates to de-laminate & then they will slip.

2) is this seal replaced from the pto side or the rear side? I would guess the pto side.....The seal is replaced from the tractor side of the rear housing [see picture, red arrow] ,,,A pretty big AND HEAVY job. The picture is of a 720 but it's basically the same..

3) I don't really want to do it now winter is a better time for me, would it be all that bad to over fill the pto with the 10w oil my manual calls for to keep the rear oil out?.....You could try it but that rear PTO has an oil pump [see picture] & that pump will probably pull the gear oil in anyway.

4) I need my service manual yet does any one have the 1-800 number for them close by I can't seem to find it ,I know I saw it in GMag....I don't have it handy, if no one else posts it I will look it up for you & post it later.

5) When tightening the clutch pack does it make the rod measurement longer or shorter?....Depends on if it is too tight or too loose before the adjustment. You need the travel within the specs to have the proper clutch force applied to the clutch pack.

6) When I do go in to replace that seal would you recommend clutch pack replacement?seems like I might be right there.... I recommend that any worn or delaminated clutch plates be replaced as well as any worn parts or weak springs.

7) the extra heavy oil that leaks in would that tend to cause pto shaft drift when not engaged?.....That heavy oil can cause the clutch pack to drag when released & also sticks between the plates & won't let them spin free...
