Today---I've been cleaning some parts with Brake Parts Cleaner. (Spray Can) Seemed to work well.
The surface was clean and dry and evaporates quickly.

I wire brushed the surfaces, then used acetone. Done right that stuff really really works. I filled in worn crank splines and pushed my flywheel on and its holding now for 2 yrs. $4.00 JB Weld or $600 welding job??? hmmm

All of the below methods of cleaning will work except STEEL WOOL!! Steel wool is very oily and you will be defeating your purpose. If you don't believe this just hold a match to steel wool and watch it burn. In fact SW is better off used for polishing than for roughing up.

Jack:

Steel wool doesn't burn because of oil...it burns because the iron is so fine that it allows rapid oxidation. Degrease some, let it dry, and light a match to it. It's a seventh grade science experiment.

Scruffy:

You can use some MEK if you have it. Lacquer thinner as a second choice. If you can warm it with out damaging any adjoining paint, a propane flame will cook any residue to carbon. Then you just scuff it with steel wool and anything left will meld with the epoxy. The main contanimant to avoid is oil.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is MEK. Is that the brand name and/or product name?

Thanks,
scruf

Yep, Methyl Ethyl Ketone. A highly volatile aromatic hydrocarbon solvent. I bought my last quart at Home Depot in the paint thinner section.
