What would be a good choice of JD to run a square baler and disc mower? I'd like something that is gas powered, wide front end, and some external hydraulics. What's the oldest JD with these features?

Thanks

I pull a JD 1219 hay conditioner with a 1975 JD 830 3 cyl diesel. Have ever sense the tractor was new. It now has over 6600 Hours on it and still handles the 1219 with ease. Also pull a JD 14T baler with a wagon attached that will hold 150 bale. The only problem that I have ever had was one year when I got into some heavy tall orchard grass hay. The crimper rolls were getting a hold of the hay before the sickle cut it off and it was making the slip clutch slip. Good standing hay I mow about 4 MPH. In down and tangled hay I drop back a gear or two and run slower and give the reel time to pick it up.

I don't know if my outfit would work for everyone, but...I have a 4020LP, use it with a 3pt. 270JD disc mower, and a 347JD baler. It works pretty good for me. This is my opinion...The 3 point disc mower is pretty darned heavy---I really think a 3020 would be a little on the light side and possibly a bit short on power to run it. I wish my disc mower was a trail type, hooking it up is a hassle. I do like the disc mower though, the only thing that would be better (my opinion)...would be a brand new JD disc swather with a super good crimper hooked to my 4020!!! Hey, if I win the lottery, I'm gonna get one!

RE: HOOK-UP HASSLES..... Larry, you can get around the hook-up hassles by the judicious use of the tractor's hydraulics. With the tractor properly positioned, first hook up the hydraulic hose and apply "up" pressure. The hitch, being lighter than the cutter bar, will raise up; and as it pivots will move to the right, allowing you to hook up that pesky right-hand lift arm; after hooking it up, raise jack and lower the hydraulic cylinder and complete hook-up. Reverse procedure to unhook..... ....

I agree with these other guys about the narror front end---it sure would be nice mowing with one. I've got a wide front and get along pretty good with it. I wouldn't trade the wide front for a narrow one. I can usually bale my hay (alfalfa) a 1/2 a day or day ahead of someone mowing theirs with a a swather...the disc mower just lays it out and it sure dries better. My Dad tried a new idea disc mower on a 630JD a few years ago....it was jsut too much for the 630. I can't remember what length cutter bar it had, but it sure wouldn't work for him.

two lunger pull on pto equipment, they tend to pound the knuckles to pieces. For what you intend to use this tractor for, I would buy a four cylinder tractor.

I agree with the 10 or 20 series but would definitly consider a diesel, I have not yet seen a 10 or 20 series gas or LP that would start good on a regular basis without a lot of maintenance

Depends on the size of your Disk mower.. I"m guessing that its a 3pt mount.. which means you'll need a seperate SCV to raise and lower the bar.. which rules you into the 20 or 30 series, if you want a 2 cylinder... I think you will have to have a 720-730 to run most of the disk cutters.. and I would not rule out a diesel.. (You will have better fuel economy with the diesel.. and better power.) A 620-630 would be pushing it especially if it is a 9ft cutter... I agree with the others a 3010-20 or 4010-20 would be perfect... and the narrow fronts make nice corners... Good Luck

Wide frt are ideal to cut hay, true don't turn as sharp as a narrow. But why drive on the hay you've just cut? In Pa. the ground is too wet to drive the hay down any more. We use a 730 w/f on a 1219 conditioner. You would need a 3010 or bigger for a disc bine.

There will be some disagreement but, I'd say a 3010 or 3020 with a tricycle front end. The narrow front end will allow you to make a decent right angle corner with a haybine or diskbine.

I'll second that - I'm always surprised when someone wants to put a WF on a tricycle. The tricycle seems so much more convenient, both in the field & as a chore tractor in tight spaces.
