I tore down and rebuilt my carb on a '57 620. The diagram from the parts book shows what appears to be a steel ball for each port. When I tore mine down those steel ball were not there. What is their function and what problems will I have if they are not there. I just bought the tractor and have not worked it yet.

those balls are a pain....generally I can get the passages fairly clean with them in. Tried to drill out but never could get a bit to touch the balls. I understand Robert's uses some sort of heat process. But I can see that the rear gasket may seal this area or you could tap for some small plugs.

My 620 carburetor was such a mess I had to send it to Roberts carburetor repair in Spencer, IA. Removing the balls stopped me cold. Robert Beaver told me he has them removed by someone who welds the wire of a wirefeed welder on to the balls and then pulls them out via the wire.

I had heard of that process before but with my welding skills and the lack of a wirefeed welder, I figured if I tried this process I would probaly weld the balls in the carburetor permanently!

Roberts was able to completely clean my carburetor and the 620 has been running great ever since. Before all I could get was one cylinder functioning. I would recommend Roberts Carburetor Repair w/o hesitation.

Roberts is good but WOW. Is a carb rebuild worth as much as the tractor cost? Why does he replace all the parts if the old ones are good?

As far as I know he doesn't change parts unless they need to be.

AGR538, it would probably not idle worth a hoot if those idle passage plugs [balls] are not there so that leads me to believe you have a universal replacement carb that doesn't even have those balls installed. Those replacement carbs are a real pain to clean the idle passages on.
~If you have an original carb that has those passages but just no balls in their ends it probably isn't a big deal as long as the base gasket seals the passage ends. If those passages leak air into the idle system your idle will range from poor to non existent...
~You can either install new passage plug balls, or just tap the passage ends & use short set screws with a little sealer...
~Let us know what you have & are working with?

Dear AG, those lil steel ball thingys are what closes off those lil passages/ports you mentioned. They can be a pain to remove, so all those passages can be cleaned out properly. Maybe a past owner drilled them out and didnt bother to replace them????? ????

I have to drill just to where they come out then install new ones (Roberts Carb repair or Dennys etc etc has new ones) and peen punch them (the holes)in so they cant pop back out. Its been a while, but if I recall, there are a couple of them that terminate against where the gasket goes anyway. Im not even sure if I replaced those, but as I said, its been too dern long but mine runs and idles great.

Good Luck, let us know
