Well, I finally have all of the parts I ordered so I'm in the process of tearing it down. Last night I pulled the clutch plates, driver disk, dust cover, and pulled the pulley off the crank shaft. According to the I&T shop manual it looks like my next step is to drive out the pulley bearing and retainer with a punch. Then the pulley comes off? I need to replace the clutch tension adjusting bolts, dogs, toggles, and pins.

Are there any common surprises in this whole process? Any tips to keep me out of trouble?

Thanks,
scruffy

Hey Scruffy go ahead and prepare to have the gear removed.I have been there done that.I absolutly did not have anything big enoough to get the gear off.I gathered up all my parts I needed ahead of time.I took the assembly to the local dealer and payed them to press it off and press it back on after I installed the new parts. They broke thier puller during the removal process. It set me back two days while JD waited for a new puller to come in.Its well worth it.Good luck,Jack(TN).

Well, I've taken your advise Jack and called my local dealer and have an appointment for Thursday morning to have the gear removed, replace all my parts while the gear is off, and press the gear back on. Drop it off on the way to work, pick it up on the way home. Well, that's the hope anyway.

It'll be alot easier on me and my tools, but harder on the wallet.

Thanks again!

Scruffy, you ask? "~next step is to drive out the pulley bearing and retainer with a punch. Then the pulley comes off?" Did you mean to say the drive gear comes off? If so, that gear will probably need to be heated & a press used to get that gear off. The 70 clutch pulley gear is one of the hardest drive gears to get off in my opinion. When reinstalling that gear heat it in hot oil then press it back on. BE CAREFUL & support that pulley hub from the underside, if the pulley is just set on the outer rim & the gear pressed back on it is REAL EASY to break that pulley..

Oh no, I don't want to take the gear off! I should take a step back. To change the dog, toggles, pins, and operating bolts what do I have to do? The dust cover is kind of in the way, but I can probably work between it and the pulley.

I was following the I&T manual. It says "To disassemble the removed pulley, use a punch and hammer as shown in fig JD1129 and remove the bearing retainer and bearing. Remove the operating bolts, pins, dogs, and toggles. Using a suitable puller, remove drive gear and slide operating sleeve fom pulley."

Based on the order the steps are given and from looking at the expanded view, I couldn't figure out how removing the bearing and retainer would allow me to get to the dogs, toggles, etc. easier.

So my question is how do I change the dogs, toggles, pins, and operating bolts.

thanks for your help! Sorry for the confusion, I'm confused....

Scruffy:

You have to remove the gear so that the big dust shield can come off to expose the dogs and toggles. You even worte that when you quoted from the I&T book:

"Using a suitable puller, remove drive gear and slide operating sleeve fom pulley."

They make it sound easy, huh ?

I've been postponing that job myself. I've heard horror stories about it.
