I'm about to replace the tires on the rear of my 1965 4020. It currently has 15.5-38 tires. I was wondering if it will be OK to put 18.4-38 on in their place? I'm thinking that the later model 4020's that had 18.4 tires had a 34" rim. Is that correct? Do y'all think I would gain any traction by going to the 18.4-38 tires? I use this tractor for everything from rowcrops to haying.

I keep seeing all the comments about home MUCH bigger the 18.4-38's are than the 18.4-34's. Go to firestoneag.com and look it up. They are basically the same size just more sidewall on the 34's.

18.4-34 diam 65.4" and circumference 191"
18.4-38 diam 69.3" and circumference 206"

depending on the airpressure and field conditions the extra height isnt gonna make much difference. Sure not worth spending the money to find 34" hubs and rims to change it over.

I will agree that the 16.9-38's are a good compromise tire. Almost as much tire as the 18 but not as tall. About 4" less or so or about as much difference over ur 15.5's as 18.4-34's verses 18.4-38's.

Why does everyone seem to have something against bigger is better? I think they all should have come with 20.8's on em anyway!

If Your 15.5's are Factory, You should have 14 X 38 rims. The 18.4X38's need a 16" rim. 2" wider. The alternate rim for the 18.4 X 38 is a 15 X 38. Just about all 4010/4020's I saw new had either 15.5's or 18.4X34's. I heard of one guy putting 18.4X38's on a good running 4020 and was real disappointed, Thought it changed His 4020 into a 3020. For a tractor to do light drawbar work & PTO work I like the sounds of the 16.9X38's, They are approved to use the 14X38 rim as an alternate, not as tall as a 18.4X38.

I've seen bunches of them around here with 18.4 x 38's on them. Personally, I think as long as you stay within reason, it's a matter of preference. Mine has 16.9 x 38's on it, and I am probably going to go to 18.4 x 38's next time.

You could buy 4020 with 18.4-34 and if I remember correctly you could get a 16.9 something. As for the 18.4-38 it could be to big around and cut your power a lot. But don't know for sure.
