I have the opportunity to buy a John Deere Model A, but I'm told the motor is stuck, and the mag is missing. Other than that the tractor appears to be all there. The rear tires are new. Paint job is pretty much weathered. Is it worth starting out with this type of project. the guy is asking $850.00.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I tend to agree that $850 might be alittle to much since the mag is missing. My advice would be to offer $550 with money in hand: "SHOW ME THE MONEY" type deal! Good luck!!!

Vern,
Just about finished with a 1945 A. New rear tires alone were in the $500-$600 range by the time you get new tubes, mounting, etc.

If you look in the archives you can find many suggestions on ways to free it up. Suggest you do a search on 'stuck' or 'engine stuck'. Good luck.

The guy is asking too much at least in my neck of the woods. An A with a stuck motor and no mag would be worth 350 - 400 tops around here. 850 would buy you a running one any day of the week.

When I got my '45 "A", the motor was also "stuck", but not bad, and I got mine to turn over by gently rocking back and forth. I went ahead and tore it down, replaced rings, honed the cylinders, etc. It's now running again, and I'm as proud as a kid with his first electric train!
As for value, I'd guess that's up to you. The magneto carries a pretty hefty price tag (I think around $300) in "Green Magazine", so you might really want to barter from the standpoint of an incomplete tractor. My opinion, and it's worth exactly what it cost you! LOL
