I have JD336 baler that worked great last year, only missed 2 bales. This year it seems to miss 1 out of 10. The knots seem to be somewhat tying but they pull apart. Any ideas? The knife on it seems sharp. Thanks

Sounds allot like my 328 a couple years back, worked fine the season before , stored undercover all winter and then missed bales like crazy ,,,, tucker fingers were sticking , sprayed on a little PB Blaster, freed them up and worked like a charm from then on

A trick that I was told (and actually used) was to take diesel fuel and clean up your knotters. One of the most common mistakes made is over greasing the knotters. This can cure some tying problems without much effort.

Another variation on this (one I won't use) that my grandfather used was to throw dirt on the knotters. He claimed this would make it work. Supposedly my mother has actually seen it work.

In the end, I agree with the other posts. Its usually something mechanical and it needs adjustment or parts replacement.

I have a Ford 542 baler that will miss every other bale if you run the baler at less than PTO speed. If you run it at or above PTO speed it only misses when it changes spools of twine and then not always.

If you are only getting a half a knot it is probrably the tucker finger not catching the twine when the needles are in the knoters. They are either ahead or behind the twine. Trip your bale adjustment arm and have someone role the flywheel by hand while you whatch the needles make there cycle, make sure the tucker fingers are catching the twine and bringing it into the bill hook. You can adjust the fingers by taking out a cotter pin and screwing the threaded rod in or out witch ever way it needs to go. I hope this helps.

For what it's worth, and there are sure to be LOTS of knotter questions as hay season comes on strong, My old timer, NH dealer, Buddy, tells me that fully 90% of all knotter trouble can be traced to the Twine(tucker)fingers. Those of you with manuals for your machine, check this first. It may save you from a goose chase?

My 336 spent last winter outside, and even well oiled (I thought) there was a skim of rust on the bill hooks. It missed a bunch of knots particularly as I reduced the bale tension. I polished the heck out of the bill hooks, sharpened the knives, put on a new wiper (old one was bent and cracked) and voila! runs like a dream. I'm also putting in the footings for the shop/machine shed this week.
