We drug home a JD 55ABH ( printed on cross member) yesterday from it's grave.
Have never seen one like it, was wondering if some farmer had reinvented it. Everything looks pretty much as I remember a 55, but the land wheel. It has a cast center, with clip on tire and rim. Tire was a 21in, the same as came on a Model A Ford. Has a place for the Hyd Cyl. but the lift mech. down at the Axle looks like part of a Mech lift. Got me buffaloed. ;-). Thanks for any info on this since I'm not a JD authority. Max

Just to help you understand the plow a bit better, there was no 55abh plow, now wait, John Deere labeled all that series as #55A-B-H because they were so similar. Actually the 55A was a 12 or 14" rice plow. a 55B was 12-14 or 16" clutch lift plow and a 55H is a 55B with Hydraulic lift and depth control. Meaning, of course it was raised by the hydraulic cylinder. The early ones equipped with rubber tires did indeed come with the 21" land wheel you describe, later that was changed to a 16" then 15" tire/wheel. There were many 55B plows converted to hydraulic lift, I guess then they would be called whatever you think best(55BH, 55B>H, 55C??) The 55H plows from the factory before 1948 had a leveling crank, where the clutch lift plows always used a lever for adjusting the level, after 1948 cranks were discontinued on hyd versions. So if you have an early one with hydraulics and a leveling LEVER, it was converted from a clutch lift model. Bob

Max, David, and daveo, I have a 55ABH Hyd Plow, and it has a 16" land wheel. which was real rusty. I contacted a Mr Douglas Coats, in Dubque,IA, and he sent me the parts that I needed to fix my plow with. His Phone no is 608-455-241 after 7:00 P M his time.He is a very nice fellow and real reasonable on his parts to. Seems to know a lot about the different plows. Jack

No authority on plows myself, but I have one exactly as you described. Has the cast bolt-in tail wheel, has a trip lift with the 5.50x21 tire (which by the way is impossible to find new). Many of the old trip lift plows were converted to hydraulic lift, and the lift mechanism was left on the plow, usually with the trip lever tied back so it wouldn't be accidentally tripped. When I was a teenager we had two of the 55ABH plows and when Dad bought a new 730 in 1959 we built a hydraulic lift mechanism for one of them and it worked fine. I need a new 5.50x21 tire for mine, and if I can't find one I will probably cut the wheel off the spokes and weld a 16" rim on it. Hate to do that but Miller's is the only place I can find a new tire and they want way to much $$$$. Good luck.
David

Just a thought...Ask around in some of the other tractor model forums and see if anyone else has a source for the 5.50 x 21 tire. It may be 'odd' in our John Deere circle but very ordinary for some other application! The trick is finding someone who knows where to look! Good Luck!
